about Oakenshaw Community Choir

Oakenshaw Community Choir was formed in 2012 to bring people together from Oakenshaw and surrounding areas to share and enjoy singing and making music. New singers are always welcome.

Announcement: Coronation Celebration at St Andrew’s Church, Oakenshaw on Sunday 7th May, 2.30pm.

Our Mission & Vision

We welcome new members at any time of the year. Anyone who enjoys singing is welcome, there are no auditions and no requirement to be able to read music. The atmosphere is informal, so people feel welcome and supported.  We are a positive community of people who come together to share the joy of music and singing.

The purpose of our choir is not only to prepare for performance, but to sing for the sheer joy of singing. Singing helps the body produce endorphins, the happy hormones, which lifts spirits and boost the immune system.  As well as other great health benefits all round, for breathing, for your heart and for emotional well-being.  In other words singing is good for the soul!

The Benefits of Singing

There are many benefits to singing beyond the pure joy of it .   The following have been identified as some of the benefits of singing –

Lung development and strengthening, which aids the improvement of oxygen supply to the body.

Improvement in posture, increased concentration and the improvement of energy and mood.

Building of personal confidence.

Other benefits that have been noted have included the improved in breathing for people with asthma or who suffer panic attacks.  The reduction in feelings of depression or anxiety through the release of endorphins during singing.  Improvement in diction and vocabulary.

Choir History

Oakenshaw Community Choir was formed in 2012. we enjoy singing a range of music from popular songs to songs from the musicals, and many more in between.  We have performed at many community events around the Kirklees area. Celebrating Christmas, Golcar Lily Day, supporting local charities and hosting concerts purely for the love of music.

Our musical director is Maureen Boocock, who is a highly experienced choir leader. She arranges the musical pieces for the choir to suit our voices and is an excellent teacher, with loads of enthusiasm for music.
